The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the International Disaster, Emergency and Law Network (IDEAL) with support from the Italian Red Cross have launched a free online disaster law course. The course, Law and Policies for the Protection of the Most Vulnerable is a Massive Online Open Course (MOOC).
Isabelle Granger, Global Lead on Disaster Law and Auxiliary Role at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, explained that the course is extremely relevant especially because of the increasing number of disasters. She touched on the importance of law, regulations, and contingency plans to the how “we prevent, prepare, respond and recover from disasters and emergencies.” And she also mentioned that people within humanitarian, government and academic sectors who have knowledge of legal frameworks are needed.
About the IFRC and IDEAL Course
The Law and Policies for the Protection of the Most Vulnerable course has three modules:
- Disaster Law: Main Concepts, Actors and Regulatory Dynamics
- Law and Comprehensive Disaster Risk Management: Thematic Issues
- Disaster Law and Governance at the Regional and National Levels
Each module consists of a series of thematic sessions, a video lecture, complementary reading materials and a keynote podcast.
To enroll, participants must register on IFRC’s learning platform, then search for “disaster” law to find and join the course.
